First read our advice on chosing keywords &
phrases.
There are a number of HTML tags which can be considered signposts to visiting
spiders. These should be used to give a clear and concise message about what
your website and each page on it is actually about.
Your primary keywords and keyphrases should be reinforced using these elements.
In most cases it will be more important to highlight topic and regional words
rather than your company name. Be careful not to spam by packing just too
many keywords. Keep to your topic and highlight the main words you would
wish to be found for.
-
Title - <title> ... </title>
Arguably the most important element on any page. Have a short keyword rich
phrase here. Remember it will appear in search results elsewhere so should
make sense and remain enticing to click.
-
Meta Keyword - <meta name="keywords" content="....">
List important keywords from the text, most important first. Do not put any
words here which are not on the page.
-
Meta Desciption - <meta name="description" content="....">
Place a short overview of the page in normal prose. Make sure some important
keywords are used.
-
Header Tag - <hn>...</hn>
Use keyword rich text.
-
Link Anchor Text - <a href="x.html">...... </a>
Use keyword rich text, particularly relating to the page to which the link
points.
-
Alt Parameter - <img alt="....">
Places words 'behind' an image. Take advantage of this to give a short keyword
rich description of the image if it shows product, logo or has other importance
for your services. If the image is a link, use alt= as you would anchor
text.
-
Bold - <b>...</b>
Important keywords and phrases can be set bold. This emphasises their
importance.
